Cameras are rolling in Queensland this week as the feature documentary Beyond the Reef goes into production. Beyond the Reef is a family co-viewing experience which takes audiences on a journey to one of the most beautiful places in the World - Far North Queensland, Australia - to explore this versatile and spectacular landscape. Famous for the Great Barrier Reef, the area is world-renowned for its precious ecosystems and is the backdrop to one of the biggest conversations in environmental change.
Filmed in large format 8k and designed for a global giant screen release, Beyond the Reef showcases the landscape by land, air and sea, with local stories, insights and inspiration along the way. From diving the Great Barrier Reef, taking a safari in the Daintree Rainforest, four-wheel driving on Fraser Island and sailing the Whitsunday Islands, audiences will feel completely immersed in the experience of a lifetime.
Beyond the Reef is a Steve Jaggi Company (SJc) production with In Three Production. The film is directed by Luke Wheatley (The 48 Hour Destination) with DOP Simon Christidis ACS capturing the natural beauty of the region in large format 8k.
Luke Wheatley comments, “I’m hugely excited to be partnering with Steve Jaggi and team on this project. I am passionate about travel and I can’t wait to show the world what we have on our doorstep here in Queensland. To be working with Simon Christidis again and upping the ante from a production point of view with large format filming, is just fantastic.”
Producer Steve Jaggi adds, “Tropical north Queensland is a very special place to me – many of our films and series (such as This Little Love of Mine, Kidnapped and Dive Club) were shot up and around the Great Barrier Reef. I’m thrilled to be working with Luke and his team on this exciting project, which aims to capture high-quality vision of the precious reef and share these iconic Queensland landscapes with family audiences around the globe. I’m also excited by the possibilities opened up by technology, filming specifically for large format and working with a world-class post production team to deliver a visually stunning and engaging film”.
Beyond the Reef is produced by Beckie Adams, Steve Jaggi and Spencer McLaren, with Kylie Pascoe and Kelly Son Hing co-producing. Brisbane based post-production facility Serve Chilled (whose recent credits include the Netflix original series Dive Club) will deliver the finished film in stunning Dolby Vision HDR with accompanying Dolby Atmos soundtrack.
